EFFECT OF IRRIGATION REGIME AND TIMING/RATES OF RETARDANT APPLICATION (BASED ON PLANT DENSITY) ON COTTON WEIGHT PER BOLL IN THE IMPORTED XINLUZHONG-52 VARIETY

In this study, foreign cotton varieties were cultivated under two regimes: the first involved maintaining soil moisture prior to irrigation at 70–75–65% of field capacity (FC), a theoretical plant density of 220,000–240,000 plants/ha, and six applications of plant growth retardants during the growing season; the second involved moisture levels of 65–70–60% FC, a density of 150,000–160,000 plants/ha, and three applications of retardants. Compared to the respective control variants, the weight of cotton per boll was 0.3–1.2 g higher, and the yield increase ranged from 9.8 to 28.0 centners/ha.
