Abstract

This article examines the historical development of English medical terminology, with particular emphasis on the lexical units of the field of cardiology. The diachronic analysis of the terminology is conducted across four historical stages. Furthermore, the etymology of the medical terms introduced during each stage is comparatively analyzed in relation to contemporary cardiological lexical units.

6. Sources=etkevk2& (an electronic version of eVK2) [accessed 19/11/2021]. I reached this number through an advanced search on the terms ‘medical recipe’ and ‘+15c’ (1,861 results). The database also gives sixty- eight results for the search terms ‘medical recipe’ and ‘+14c’, but I have omitted these from the count so as not to skew the comparison with fifteenth- century manuscripts of Chaucer. It should also be noted that in eVK2, Kurtz and Voigts have only recorded groups of three recipes or more and individual recipes of interest.
