ANALYSIS OF COLOUR NAMES IN AN INDIRECT TRANSLATION OF RAY BRADBURY’S THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES

This article offers a comparative study of the use of color names in Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles and its indirect translation into Uzbek. The purpose of the research is to determine the role of color in shaping the novel’s worldview and to highlight its significance as a marker of the author’s individual style. The material of analysis includes colour lexemes in both the original and the translated text, while the focus is placed on their structural-semantic organization and the translation techniques applied. The study employs component, contextual, and comparative analysis, alongside statistical methods and continuous sampling. Findings demonstrate that Bradbury’s colour designations function not only as direct nominative units but also as essential elements of the novel’s poetics, contributing to its stylistic distinctiveness. The narrative develops a specific chromatic palette, closely tied to central themes of the novel, primarily represented by the recurring colour triad in both versions. Colour attributes are expressed through nouns, adjectives, verbs, participles, and multi-word combinations, with particular attention given to figurative “object” colour nominations involving implicit comparisons. In Amir Fayzulla’s indirect translation, a notable preference for comparative constructions with colour components reflects the translator’s effort to render chromatic nuances with precision. Special emphasis is placed on strategies of translating Bradbury’s original colour nominations, including generalization, modulation, compensation, concretisation, lexical expansion, omission, and descriptive translation. The results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of color terminology as a stylistically marked component of literary discourse and hold relevance for comparative lexicology, literary text analysis, and translation studies.
