COMPARATIVE SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL LEGAL TERMINOLOGY IN UZBEK AND ENGLISH AND THE CHALLENGES OF TERMINOLOGICAL UNIFICATION

This article examines the comparative semantic and linguistic characteristics of international legal terminology in the Uzbek and English languages. In the context of globalization, the accurate representation and unification of legal terminology have become increasingly important as Uzbekistan continues to harmonize its national legislation with international legal standards. The study analyzes more than 200 key legal terms extracted from the texts of United Nations conventions and international treaties using comparative-typological and componential analysis methods. The findings reveal that although the majority of the terms have full or partial equivalents in Uzbek, semantic gaps (lacunae) and cases of semantic narrowing arise due to the differences between the Anglo-Saxon and Continental legal systems. In particular, contextual inconsistencies were identified in the interpretation of such fundamental legal concepts as jurisdiction and treaty within Uzbek legal discourse. Based on the findings, the article proposes practical recommendations, including the development of a multilingual explanatory dictionary of international legal terminology and the introduction of legal translation courses in higher education institutions.
